Community Mural Project
Renowned muralist, Mario Torero, partnered with Conway students again. This time to co-create a community mural project.
Funded by the Escondido Community Foundation, Mario Torero designed an Escondido Community Scene has been approved by the City of Escondido. The mural will be installed near Washington Park in Escondido later this year.
Mr. Torero stated, “it would be an honor for us to work with Conway students again because they have that passion, experience and skill in creating artwork with meaning”.
Art collaboration in action
The panels were brought to our school and 4th - 6th grade students participated in art workshops led by Mr. Torero and Sarah Mondragon.
Students meticulously learned how to choose and mix colors and learned about proper application and brush strokes.  They learned about the texture to apply to faces, clothing, landscapes, animals, trees and other compositional elements of the work.
Mario guided students on the technique of a collaborative mural execution from the historical perspective of the Chicano Arts movement. Students wished they could paint all day and asked if there were another other projects like this coming because as several students stated, “We can make the world a better place” and they want to be part of it!
Applying feedback
Mario Torero is one of the founding muralists of Barrio Logan’s Chicano Park and a founder of the Centro Cultural de La Raza in Balboa Park. He regularly holds art workshops locally, nationally and internationally with middle schools, high schools and university students. And of course the Human Rights project completed in 2021 with Conway is visual when driving by. His art was recently featured in a national collection at the Smithsonian on Chicano Graphic Arts and he has given art workshops at and is in the collection of the Library of Congress.

Community Mural Project
We look forward to the ribbon cutting and unveiling of the completed project soon. Our Conway Crew is grateful for this opportunity to learn from Mr. Torero and apply new skills in this collaborative community project and MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE.
