BWD 2024

Our students join hundreds of students across the country to commemorate EL Education’s “Better World Day,” a day of student service and civic action to create positive change in their communities. Our theme for Better Word Day is Literacy Makes Dreams Come True at Conway Academy.  This theme came about because of our 6th grade’s expedition. They discovered in their research that California has one of the lowest literacy rates in the United States.  And so, our purpose for this day is to change those stats by bringing our whole community together to read and share how literature can change lives and make dreams come true.  We have police officers, firefighters, city council members, our district’s Deputy superintendent and  all of our parents and families gathering here today to engage in literacy activities, book exchanges and a very special community literacy picnic.  This picnic will enable all to have the opportunity to read aloud books to each other that have inspired us to make our dreams come true.

This Better World Day project matters because literacy is the great equalizer in society.

Literacy is fundamental to individual empowerment, serving as a gateway to knowledge and opportunity. It enables individuals to navigate the complexities of modern society, from understanding basic instructions to engaging with complex texts. In economic terms, literacy is a prerequisite for participation in the workforce, empowering individuals to secure better employment and higher incomes. Moreover, it fosters critical thinking skills, enabling people to evaluate information critically and make informed decisions. Societies with higher literacy rates tend to experience lower levels of poverty, improved public health outcomes, and greater political stability. Ultimately, literacy is not just about reading and writing; it's about equipping individuals with the tools they need to fulfill their potential and contribute meaningfully to society.
