Principal update #13

As an Expeditionary Learning School, the tradition of crew is both a culture and a structure. Crew impels us to work together and to support everyone's learning and growth. This practice is deeply connected to our EUSD Framework for the Future and our Expeditionary Learning model.

The week started with our annual costume parade. The joy and spirit of crew permeated throughout our campus. See some EPIC photos here- https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1nJaSgcgouHqHUindlp3nExGFqAS2KICa?usp=sharing

Green Crew

As a EL school, we empower our learners to Get Smart, by doing good. Our recycling team, known as our Green Crew did it!

  • Conway is now set as a model waste station school for EUSD. YAY!!!!!

  • The Director of the City of Escondido's recycling program met with Conway's Green Crew on Tuesday. The students shared their experience and told them about their waste audit results. They were super impressed.

  • Because of their data, the City of Escondido funded Conway's waste stations signs, stands and one Pour Away Cadet (yellow milk collection device). The total cost of the station is about $800. The Pour Away is currently what schools and airports are using to collect liquid waste. They were designed by a former school facilities person. The signs and stands are also modeled after what many schools across the country are putting in place.

  • The Green Crew students are totally ready to help their peers use the three stream waste station properly. They even helped put together the sign stands yesterday with the folks from the City.

  • Additionally, the boys on the Crew seem quite knowledgeable about how the Pour Away works, too.

Because of Green Crew's work, the city is offering to purchase more of these stations for EUSD schools. Conway learners are making the world a better place.

This week in our library, Miss Victoria led learners through steps that fostered them to be empathetic collaborators. They played reverse musical chairs. A game just like musical chairs but the class needed to work together, collaborate, and make sure everyone was able to find a seat. This game was about cooperation, inclusion and critical thinking. The kids had a great time I think!

Communication is extremely important for our EPIC school. Please make sure to scroll all the way through the weekly message. If you miss a message, you can view all communication on our website under "NEWS".

I am grateful for the opportunity to inspire students to discover their unlimited potential through Excellence, Perseverance, Integrity, and Compassion. Together we are creating an EPIC school.

We are in this together and believe, We Are Crew, not passengers.

Always in crew,

Tina Meglich, Principal
